Telluride’s Great Rankings

For the second year in a row, Telluride was ranked as the #2 ski resort in North America by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine’s Reader’s Poll. While this award is based on a myriad of criteria including everything from dining and ambience to lifts and terrain, our exceptionally high marks in ‘Local Ambience’ and ‘Terrain and Lifts’ are what put us over the top. In addition to our ranking as #2 overall by Conde Nast, Telluride also received the honor of being named #1 for Nightlife in the Rocky Mountains by visitors to On the Snow.com—the most visited winter sports website in the world with over 1.6 visitors per month during the winter season. Other recent accolades include being ranked #10 overall in Ski Magazine’s Readers’ Survey, a ranking which was bolstered by our noteworthy placement at #2 for ‘Overall Satisfaction’ and #4 for ‘Scenery’.

2009 Real Estate Round Up

In what has been an uncertain economic year Telluride, Mountain Village and San Miguel County fared quite well. In a year-by-year comparison from 2008 to 2009, real estate sales volume dropped only 3% throughout the entire County. We began to gain substantial improvement in the market in the fourth quarter. In October 2009 compared with October 2008, gross dollar volume was up by 20%. In November 2008 dollar volume was $8.1 million compared with $44 million in November 2009. December sales went from $24 million in 2008 to $49 million in 2009. The statistics are not yet in for January 2010, but we expect them to follow the trend from 2009’s 4th quarter. Properties under contract for closing in February look very encouraging.

2009 saw many substantial improvements in our lodging base. In February the new Capella Hotel opened to rave reviews. Capella is Telluride’s first five star luxury hotel. The Peaks Resort & Spa was sold in November to a local group of investors who promise to return our anchor hotel to its former glory and it is now managed by the Grand Heritage Hotel Group. We therefore now have two major hotels operating in Mountain Village along with boutique hotels including the Inn at Lost Creek and Lumiere.

The week before Christmas the Telluride Ski Resort hosted its first ever FIS Snowboarding World Cup event. Telluride was the only US stop on the tour and male and female participants came from the USA, Canada, Europe and as far as Korea, Japan, Russia and Australia and the events were televised worldwide.

The ski resort continued its work of opening new terrain with the expansion of Gold Hill chutes 2-5 for the 2009/2010 winter season. Revelation Bowl opened in 2008/2009 for some of the biggest news in the Rocky Mountain ski region. With Gold Hill 1, Palmyra Peak, Black Iron Bowl and Gold Hill 6-10 opening in 2007/2008 the ski resort has, over the last three seasons, expanded by more than 400 acres. Telluride ski area’s vertical drop is now one of the largest in North America at 4,442 feet with 3,845 vertical feet that is lift served.

Along with the ski area expansion, Telski has relocated the Nastar course to a longer and gentler location with a finish line directly under lift 4. A new half pipe has been built in the terrain park next to the one on the old race hill and it is available for night skiing from 4-8pm Thursdays through Sundays

Although we have repeatedly mentioned the improvements to Telluride’s airport it is worth repeating that it has become much safer and will accommodate a new 80 seat aircraft called the Q400 from Bombardier. See this link for more information. http://www2.bombardier.com/q400/en/home.jsp.

With new hotels, new ski terrain, vastly improved sales figures a new airport runway Telluride is looking at a bright future in 2010.

Telluride Ski Resort brings back halfpipe

Telluride Ski Resort brings back halfpipe
Night time riding under the lights, until 8 p.m.

It’s back. After two ski seasons in Telluride without a halfpipe, the mountain says it’s built the best pipe ever this year.

At 385 feet in length, with a 15 and 3/4 degree pitch and 18-foot walls, the pipe is of optimum dimensions, said Benji Charleston, Telski’s halfpipe manager.

While building a World Cup course was perhaps the most technical feat for Telluride snowmaking operations this year, the pipe is a close second, with 14 million gallons of water turned into the white stuff, and carefully sculpted by a team of four Snocats working day and night for just 13 days to build the pipe.

Charleston said the process normally takes more than three weeks to complete, but that the mountain brought in Oregon-based Planet Snow Design, which has helped to create massive half pipes and other snow features for resorts all over the west, in addition to competition events.
“The kids are just loving it. At night, you can stand here and hear them yelling at the top of their lungs. This is a very legit halfpipe,” Charleston said, standing below the pipe, bathed in the intense white light being reflected off the snow.

That’s another never-before-seen feature for Telluride — the ability to ride until 8 p.m. under parking lot lights mounted on the towers of the Pomma lift. A halfpipe or terrain park lit for evening riding is a rarity in the West, with the only other night riding at Park City, Utah.

Charleston and Telski Snowmaking Manager Ryan Mackey joked that, with the somewhat limited scope of activities for Telluride’s high school set, they might pitch a date night at the park. Bring your girlfriend, but also bring your gnarliest grabs, twists and spins, or she might be going home with some other park rat.

And on Friday night, the pipe was a welcome refuge for those riders who had worked all day, but still felt the need to hit a little powder, and maybe toss a trick or two.“I love it,” said Justin Justesen, a local cook who said he spends as much time in the park as he can. “One main thing for me, as long as I have a pipe and some stuff to jib off of, I’m a happy camper.”

And keeping that camper happy all comes back to the design and maintenance. The pipe was designed to yield 6 to 8 hits for the average rider, with a booter at the end that was created from snow left over from the World Cup course.

“It’s a workout getting all the way down it,” Charleston said.
